(ANSAmed) - ISTANBUL- Wikipedia returned online in Turkey on Wednesday after nearly three years of being blocked in the country.
The move came following a decision by the Constitutional Court published in the country's Official Gazette on Wednesday that explained the reasons for its ruling in December that banning the online encyclopedia was a violation of freedom of expression.
The Turkish Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) had said it would wait for the official publication of the ruling before eliminating the block.
The ban went into effect on April 29, 2017 after Wikipedia didn't comply with the request to remove contents that the Turkish government deemed offensive, such as some pages in which the Turkish government was accused of supporting terrorist groups in Syria.
The measure was strongly condemned in recent years by groups defending freedom of expression.
Turkey censors thousands of websites accused of spreading illegal material, including alleged terrorist propaganda.
Even social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter have in the past been temporarily blocked.
