US stocks open lower, retreating from monthly high

US stocks opened Tuesday lower as indices retreated from their highest level in a month.

The Dow Jones fell 164 points, or 0.49%, to 33,465 at 10.00 a.m. EDT (1500GMT).

The S&P 500, meanwhile, lost 18 points, or 0.45% to 4,001.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq decreased 25 points, or 0.22%, to 11,338 points.

All three indexes rallied Monday to close at their highest levels in a month.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, fell rose 2.4% to 20.29, while the 10-year US Treasury yield rose 0.6% to 3.545%.

The dollar index added 0.15% to 102.29, whereas the euro lost 0.2% to $1.0845 against the greenback.

Precious metals were in negative territory, with gold trimming 0.5% to $1,922 per ounce and silver shedding 0.7% to $23.30.

Crude oil prices were also down, with global benchmark Brent crude losing 0.4% to $87.83 per barrel, and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $81.11 – a 0.6% daily loss.
