Top Chinese gov’t body to oversee probe into chemical factory blast that killed 12

China’s top government body will oversee an investigation into an explosion at a chemical factory last weekend that killed 12 people.

The State Council, the Chinese central government Cabinet, will supervise the investigation into Sunday’s explosion at the chemical company in Panjin, a coastal city in northeast China’s Liaoning province, the Chinese daily Global Times reported on Thursday.

At least 12 people were killed and 30 others injured in the explosion while one person is still missing since Sunday.

The blast, which occurred during the facility's maintenance process, sent shockwaves throughout the chemical plant, shaking nearby homes and other structures.

Videos from the scene showed smoke billowing from the facility.
