Sebastian Korda stuns 2-time Australian Open finalist Medvedev in Melbourne

US tennis player Sebastian Korda knocked 2021 and 2022 Australian Open finalist Daniil Medvedev out of this year's Grand Slam on Friday.

Ranked 29th in men's singles, Korda beat Medvedev 7-6 (9-7), 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) in a Round 3 match at Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena to progress in the 2023 Australian Open.

In Round 4, Korda, 22, will take on world no. 10 Hubert Hurkacz from Poland, who eliminated Canada's Denis Shapovalov in a five-set match.

In women's singles, Greek sixth seed Maria Sakkari returned home after a shocking loss to China's Lin Zhu.

Zhu defeated Sakkari 7-6 (7-3), 1-6, 6-4 in a Round 3 match at Margaret Court Arena.

The Chinese athlete will next face Victoria Azarenka.

Meanwhile, 18-year-old US player Coco Gauff beat her compatriot Bernarda Pera with straight sets to reach the fourth round in Melbourne.

Seventh seed Gauff, who won with the sets of 6-3, 6-2 over Pera, will play against Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko in Round 4.

The Australian Open, the first major of the year, will run through to Jan. 29.
