Fernandes wasted his chance to make a hat-trick in the 98th minute as Uruguay keeper Sergio Rochet blocked his close-range shot. One minute later, he missed another chance by aiming his shot to the left bottom corner of the crossbar and the match ended 2-0.
Portugal became the third team after France and Brazil to qualify for the Round of 16 in 2022 FIFA World Cup.
