The Guttenberg police arrested two homeless men with burglary tools last night.

GUTTENBERG–Police found an Edgewater man stopped in the middle of Boulevard East on Thursday morning asleep at the wheel and unsure of where he was, police said.

Edwin Nieves, 20, allegedly crashed into several parked cars in West New York before stopping near 68th Street and Boulevard East in Guttenberg, Sgt. Juan Barrera told NJ Advance Media on Monday. Officer Frank Pelaez spotted Nieves’ car in the middle of the road at 3:23 a.m. The car had its hazards on and was in neutral, Barrera said. The driver’s window was open, so Pelaez tapped Nieves on the shoulder and put the car in park, Barrera said.

PLUS: No criminal charges for driver who fatally struck Guttenberg woman, sheriff says

Nieves, who was asleep when approached by Pelaez, didn’t know where he was and admitted to the officer that he drank four to five beers and smoked two marijuana cigars that night, Barrera said. Pelaez noticed that Nieves’ car had heavy damage to the front-passenger side. Nieves also told the officer that he had marijuana in the car, Barrera said, and he produced a blue gym bag containing a bag of the drug, a grinder, pipes and a bag of cigars.

He was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, possession of under 50 grams of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession with the intent to distribute, possession with the intent to distribute within 1000 feet of a school, reckless driving, careless driving, underage drunken driving, failure to report an accident and several other motor vehicle violations. He also was cited for having a fake Rhode Island driver’s license, Barrera said.
