AUB to name Outpatient Surgery Center After Tanios and Souraya Semaan

NNA – The American University of Beirut (AUB) is honored to announce that it has received a $10 million donation from the Semaan Foundation to name the AUBMC’s Outpatient Surgery Center after the late Tanios and SourayaSemaan.

TaniosSemaan was born in DeirDeghaya in South Lebanon. He married Souraya El-Khoury in 1941 and they had 7 children – Mary, Nadia, Georges, Semaan, Nasra, Maroun and Saydeh. Tanios and SourayaSemaan were strong believers in education and philanthropy – traits that they have passed on to their children and 23 grandchildren.

The Tanios and SourayaSemaan Outpatient Surgery Center is a 2,000 square meter facility dedicated to outpatient (same day) surgical procedures. It will be located on the ninth floor of AUBMC’s new building, the Halim and Aida Daniel Academic and Clinical Center. It will be dedicated in the second quarter of 2017.

The Tanios and SourayaSemaan Outpatient Surgery Center will offer a wide range of procedures for patients whose surgical treatment does not require a hospital stay. The Center will be comprised of a pre-operative area, three state of the art operating theatres, a recovery area, a pharmacy and other support facilities. The Tanios and SourayaSemaan Outpatient Surgery Center will be easily accessible, and designed to be comfortable and convenient for patients.

The Semaan Foundation was established in 2011 by AUB Trustee MarounSemaan. The Semaan Foundation provides philanthropic support in the fields of education, hospitalization, and social welfare.

Mr. MarounSemaan graduated from AUB with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1977. He has been an active member of AUB’s Board of Trustees since 2013. Until recently, Mr. Semaan served on the Board of Trustees of the American University of Sharjah. He is also a founding member of the Arab Forum for Environment and Development. Mr. Semaan is a co-founder of Petrofac International, a FTSE 100 company. He served as its president when he retired in December 2013.

AUB President Dr. Fadlo R. Khuri stated: “We are very grateful to the Semaan Foundation as their support will enable AUB’s patients to experience world class care in the outpatient surgical setting, and will ensure that our best and brightest surgeons, physicians, nurses and trainees have the best possible setting to practice medicine. This is indeed a generous and impactful gift.”

Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs and Global Strategies, and Raja N. Khuri Dean for the Faculty of Medicine Mohamad H. Sayegh added: “This is a critical step in the realization of AUBMC’s 2020 vision, which seeks to elevate the quality of care at our medical center to equal that of the best in the world. Thanks to the generosity of the Semaan Foundation, we can equip our outstanding faculty and team with the facilities necessary to make this into a reality.”

Trustee MarounSemaan thanked President Fadlo Khuri and EVP/Dean Mohamed Sayegh for “giving us the opportunity to honor the life and legacy of Tanios and SourayaSemaan in such a fitting manner. This is indeed in line with my beliefs and the objectives of the Semaan Foundation”.
