Republican People’s Party (CHP) MP Enis Berberoğlu has been arrested in the suit brought into “MİT Trucks Report” published on Cumhuriyet Newspaper.
The court board firstly imposed life time imprisonment on Berberoğlu, then passed on jail term of 25 years with reduction from life time imprisonment.
Prosecutor Mehmet Yeşilkaya had demanded life time imprisonment for Berberoğlu on charge of “revealing the documents that need to remain confidential” and 10 years in prison on charge of “aiding an illegal organization though not being a member of it”.
The court separated files of Erdem Gül and Can Dündar.

Prosecution started as to the article published with the headline “Here are the weapons Erdoğan claim to not exist” on May 29 over “Procuring information as to state security”, “Political and military espionage”, “Declaring confidential information”, “Propagandizing terror organization”.
Chief Public Prosecutor Hadi Salihoğlu had declared the prosecution by press release.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had personally filed a criminal complaint and requested Dündar to be sentenced to one aggravated life imprisonment, one life imprisonment and 42 years in prison for “targeting state interests by using images contrary to facts”.
Erdoğan on a live broadcast on public channel TRT had said, “I guess the person who made this special news will heavily pay for it”.
Dündar and Gül had been imprisoned as of November 26.
Upon their objection against arrest being rejected, they had made an appeal to the Constitutional Court over “violation of freedom of press and speech and the right to security”.
Upon reporter of the Constitutional Court delivering the opinion that “freedom of press and expression, right to personal security have been violated, their imprisonment is unlawful” as to Gül and Dündar’s application, Gül and Dündar’s file had been referred to the Constitutional Court General Assembly.

On February 26, 2016, 14th Heavy Penal Court has ruled release of Can Dündar and Erdem Gül following the “violation of rights” verdict by the Constitutional Court.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has commentated on the Constitutional Court’s ruling to release the journalists Gül and Dündar as “I don’t obey the court decision. I don’t respect it either”.
On March 25, the Court has decided to hold the hearings without audience further on.
On May 3, a prison sentence of 25 years was demanded for Can Dündar and up to 10 years in prison for Erdem Gül.
The case was over on May 16. The journalists were sentenced to 10 years and 10 days in prison for “disclosing confidential information of the state”. Acquitted of coup accusations, Gül and Dündar are still on trial on charges of “knowingly and willingly helping an armed organization as a non-member”. (EA/TK)
The findings of 2017 January – April report of “Media Watch on Hate Speech Study” carried out by Hrant Dink Foundation since 2009 have been published.
The foundation has launched the project “with the purpose of drawing attention to the discriminatory language against ethnic and religious identities, sexist and homophobic discourse and news containing hate speech, raising public awareness against such publications, and contributing to reduce the use of hate speech in media, aims to generate knowledge on the concept of hate speech, create a platform for discussing the methods for combating discriminatory and racist discourse, and promote the use of a more respectful and informed language in terms of human rights and minorities”.
The latest report covers the period between January-April 2017 and has been prepared under the consultancy of Dr. İdil Engindeniz Şahan from Galatasaray University Faculty of Communication.
At the end of the report, there is an annex of some selected news reports, columns, hate speech analysis with regards to these examples and the masthead information of all contents determined to feature hate speech.
In the Media Watch on Hate Speech Study covering January, February, March and April 2017, 1,806 columns and news articles have been determined to have targeted national, ethical and religious groups.
According to the study, the most targeted group is Armenians followed by Syrians, Jews, Christians and Greeks.
Contents featuring hate speech are mostly in in form of columns followed by news articles. These contents are more to be seen on the local media than the national media. (HK/DG)

An investigation has been launched into Evrensel daily’s cartoonist Sefer Selvi upon “a complaint of a citizen”. Selvi gave a statement as part of the investigation.
A person living in Kayseri saying “the caricatures shared on @SeferSelvi_ account bother me” filed a complaint to the Prime Ministerial Communication Center (BİMER) in reference to a fake account on Twitter, Evrensel reported.
Giving a statement at Teşvikiye Police Station as part of the investigation, Selvi defended that his cartoons are within the scope of freedom of expression and within the limits of criticism. (EA/TK)
