US stocks open mixed, struggling to recover from February losses

US stocks opened mixed Thursday, after closing the first trading day of March lower on Wednesday, and still failing to recover from major losses during the month of February.

The Dow Jones was up 50 points, or 0.16%, to 32,712 at 9.48 a.m. EDT (1448GMT). The blue-chip index was flat on the previous day's session after it plummeted 4.2% last month.

The S&P 500, on the other hand, fell 17 points, or 0.44%, to 3,933 after losing 0.46% on Wednesday and posting a decline of 2.6% for the month of February.

The Nasdaq decreased 76 points, or 0.68%, to 11,301. The tech-heavy index trimmed 0.66% the day before after having a monthly decline of 1.1%.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, was up 0.7% to 20.73, and the 10-year US Treasury yield jumped 1.6% to 4.060%.

The dollar index rose 0.5% to 105.01, while the euro trimmed 0.6% to $1.0603 against the greenback.

Precious metals were mixed with gold rising 0.1% to $1,837 per ounce but silver decreasing 0.7% to $20.84.

Oil prices were up around 0.5%, with global benchmark Brent crude at $84.62 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $78.11.
