Trump’s former envoy announces candidacy for 2024 presidential race

The former state of South Carolina Republican Gov. Nikki Haley announced Tuesday her 2024 presidential bid.

"I'm Nikki Haley and I'm running for president," she said in a video message, becoming the first Republican to challenge Donald Trump in the Republican presidential nomination.

“The Washington establishment has failed us over and over and over again. It’s time for a new generation of leadership to rediscover fiscal responsibility, secure our border and strengthen our country, our pride and our purpose,” said Haley.

Haley is the daughter of Indian immigrants and served as South Carolina’s first female governor from 2011 to 2017.

She resigned from her UN post in December 2018 after serving two years in the Trump administration.

Trump officially announced his candidacy on Nov. 16, shortly after the midterm elections.
